  • A week of service and fun

    by Scott Berg
    District Webmaster, Wisconsin-Upper Michigan District

The first couple days of ICON are wrapped up, and it has been awesome! Over the last two days I have met countless new Key Clubbers from all over the world—from Aruba to New York—they are all here.

One of the most fun experiences so far has been the Meet and Greet. Almost all the Key Clubbers that came to ICON convened in a large ballroom to mingle, make new friends and most of all have fun. There was a giant game of twister, dancing and even a mechanical bull! So much excitement for day 1!

On day two of my ICON adventures, my peers and I went to a caucusing session and meet the candidates who are running for positions on the 2011–12 International Board. Caucusing may not seem fun, but to my surprise I loved the experience. I got to hear a bunch of new and exciting ideas on how the candidates want to make Key Club bigger and better—from expanding clubs and making new districts, to translating the current Key Club resources into different languages for international clubs so they, too, can succeed.

To cap off day two, we walked for The Eliminate Project. Hundreds of Key Clubbers walked a mile-and-a-half and raised US$15,418—the equivalent of approximately 8,000 mothers vaccinated! Not only was the walk a great way to help many people in need, it was also SUPER FUN. We walked on a cool Arizona night and experienced the beautiful desert landscape firsthand.

I know there will be many more great experiences to come!

    Cheers,
    Scott

  • Too excited for sleep

    by Nancy Yegerlehner
    Missouri-Arkansas District

Too excited for sleep is what many Key Clubbers were undoubtedly thinking as they walked back to their rooms after the Surf’s Up dance tonight. I know I was! With such an awesome day, and many more ahead, how could any Key Clubber not be?

Today’s opening session widened our vision to the size and reach of Key Club International, opened our eyes to the Eliminate Project, and resurfaced our dreams through Eric Saperston’s inspiring speech.

Seeing the flags of every nation in KCI, learning about The Eliminate Project and hearing Eric Saperston's story gave many Key Clubbers and eye-opening experience.

Let's not forget Paco, the Pay-it-Forward Penguin! Several Kiwanis clubs have pledged to donate a dollar for every picture of Paco with a Key Clubber uploaded to the Key Club International Facebook page. Paco has already met many new friends today, and hopefully by the end of the week he'll get to know everyone.

With such a great day, I can only imagine what tomorrow will be like! I’m sure it willed with great forums and more fun pin trading. Till then, it’s insomnia from excitement for Key Clubbers at International Convention in Phoenix, Arizona.

  • Hello Phoenix!

    by Connie Kim

It was a great day here in Phoenix, Arizona at Key Club ICON 2011! I am very much enjoying this change of weather from the typical "60 degrees and overcast" that we PNW District members live in.

We started off the day dressed up in our snazzy business professional outfits and heading over to the grand ballrooms for opening session. The overwhelming amount of spirit displayed by all of the attendees reminded me once again of the amount of enthusiasm we Key Clubbers share for service. No matter our backgrounds or the environment we live in, we are all united together in our love for service and lending a helping hand.

Opening session pumped us up for the rest of the week at ICON 2011 and also for The Eliminate Project [www.theeliminateproject.org]. I’m so glad we learned more information the project today, so I can bring back ideas to my division. I can’t believe that only US$1.80 can save and protect the life of a mother and her child! I’m excited to attend The Eliminate Project workshop tomorrow to learn more about how Key Clubbers in Division 27 of the PNW District can contribute to this wonderful cause.

    With Love and Service,
    Connie
