11 steps to hosting a successful food drive for STUFH
11/30/2009 12:00:00 AM
1. Define a timeline for your food drive.
2. Publicize the food drive. Use flyers, posters, newsletters, e-mail, press releases, public service announcements, collection bags, signs and attractive collection sites to keep your drive visible to your target donors. STUFH Ambassador Toby Markham can help with some designs.
3. Involve people in your food drive and the fight against hunger. Give them information about hunger, invite key leaders to join you on a warehouse tour or invite a speaker from a food bank to talk to your club.
4. Pick a theme such as kid-friendly breakfast (cereal, powdered milk, sugar, canned fruit), one pot family meals (macaroni and cheese, canned meat, hamburger helper, etc.) or pick your own!
5. Set a goal for the number of pounds of food you would like to collect and show everyone the progress they are making.
6. Gather small boxes that will hold about 24 cans. Remember even a small box of cans can be heavy. Decorate the boxes and put your organization's name on them.
7. Designate one specific area for your food drive—make sure everyone knows where it is.
8. Hold a counting party to count your food.
9. Take your food to your local food pantry.
10. Celebrate your success!
11. Report your poundage on your monthly report form.
