The sum of service

Here’s an inside look at the 10th Annual Large Scale Service Project with LSSP chairwoman Minerva Thai.

Q: What do you want people to know about this year’s project?
A: This is going to be the 10th LSSP for CKI, so it is quite special. Our committee is trying its best to make the event unforgettable.

Because we’re planning for so many attendees, there won’t be just one huge project; instead there will be days of smaller projects in more manageable sizes. We are, however, hoping that the Habitat for Humanity and Riverbed Cleanup projects may allow our full group to work together.

Q: How do you decide what the actual project will be?
A: We did a lot of research to choose organizations that are active in the St. Louis area. After contacting those groups to explain our event, we tried to narrow the options to organizations that would be able to accommodate such a large group. We’ll have to work with several organizations to make sure all 175 anticipated attendees have something to do every day.

Q: What are some of the ideas that you’ve thrown around so far?
A: One of the initial projects we wanted to do was to create a children’s carnival at a Children's Hospital in St. Louis. However, all of the places we asked said that the H1N1 epidemic would mean that such a large group of “strangers” would not be able to interact with children. Right now we’re looking at doing a health fair/field day with Big Brothers Big Sisters.  One silly idea, which was mostly a joke, was to have people ride the Metro and have groups get off at separate stations to clean the terminals!
